Collective happiness

Last night, Rio de Janeiro was even more marvellous... the entire city gathered to see the beautiful Christmas tree by the lake "Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas"...
Measuring 82m of height (equivalent as a 27 floor building) and weighing 500 tons, it's in the Guinness Book as the highest suspended Christmas tree in the world.
Sponsored by a big bank company, this event has made the city happier for the last 11 years, being the third most important event, after New Year's eve and Carnival.
P.S - I'm itching to mention the marketing side of it... I love it, as a marketing professional, but more as a citizen, because it's an original and successful idea that brings beauty to the city, instead of visual pollution... I am glad to have it close to my place, so I'm able to admire it every day, until 2007 comes...

Ontem o Rio de Janeiro estava ainda mais maravilhoso... toda a cidade se reuniu para ver a linda árvore de natal na Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas...
Medindo 82m de altura (equivalente a um prédio de 27 andares) e pesando 500 toneladas, ela está no Guinness Book como a mais alta árvore de natal suspensa do mundo.
Patrocinada pelo banco Bradesco, este evento vem fazendo a cidade mais feliz nos últimos 11 anos, sendo o terceiro evento mais importante no Rio, atrás apenas do Reveillon e Carnaval.
OBS - Estou me coçando para mencionar o lado marketeiro disso... Eu amo este projeto... como profissional de marketing, mas principalmente como carioca, por ser esta uma idéia original e de sucesso que traz beleza para a cidade, ao invés de poluição visual... Estou feliz em tê-la perto de casa, assim posso admirá-la todos os dias, até que chegue 2007...

Changing your perspective

A few weeks ago there was this huge blackout in Brazil, caused by a technical problem in Itaipu dam, the second-largest hydroelectric power producer in the world ( Yahoo news here ). It was very weird and a bit scary to realize how dependent we are on eletricity. For hours there was no TV, no radio, no computer. Some cellphones weren't working and despite my notebook being ok, it seemed useless without internet. I was at home when it happened and I prayed for those people who were out of their homes at that time. I imagine how many of them were in the subway, in the elevator, at the office, alone on the street. I remembered people in hospital and all kinds of situation in which people are highly dependant on electricity. I took that time to think and I realized we should be always ready to live with little, even though the media keeps saying we need more and more, in this endless consumption world. My testimony

I can't forget their faces... Their way to look at me as if we had met before. Their request for my lap as if I were their mom. I can't forget their laughs... Their smiles as if their lives were only happiness. Their hugs as if we could stay like this forever. I can't forget that moment... With so much love for a stranger. A tough moment to say goodbye. These words represent exactly what I felt yesterday, when visiting (for the first time) an orphanage. I thank God for this opportunity, showing me life just the way it is (or it should be). When I left, all I could remember was a big lesson - of happiness , hope and true love .

What's the difference of being different?

Yesterday I felt like Shrek... not belonging to the world. I felt like a stranger and that made me feel really sad. But you know what? Today I see a positive side of it. I mean... what is the point of being like everyone? Being different doesn't mean, in the first place, being wrong. Being different means being yourself.
